Bring water to a soft boil or simmer in a sauce pan or skillet. Water should be about 1.5 inches high.
Add salt to the water (this helps the egg white set quickly) optional
Break an egg into a 1/3 or 1/2 measuring cup
Lower cup and carefully place egg into the boiling water.
Simmer gently for 3-5 minutes depending on desired firmness.
Remove with slotted spoon.
I recommend draining on a fine wire mesh (splatter shield if you have one) or a cotton flour sack towel. Paper towel is recommended by some to dry the eggs, but I'm not sure if it would stick to the egg. After drying a moment, place on plate and serve.
