Delicious smoothie - with moderate salicylates featuring banana, mango and cucumber.
Category: | Breakfast and Brunch Beverages |
Seasons |
1 cup frozen mango (peeled) |
1 cup chopped frozen banana |
1/3 cup peeled long (English) cucumber |
This milk-free smoothie features a new ingredient on the low chemical list, peeled cucumber. Please be advised that this is a new addition, and therefore it is recommended to introduce cucumber slowly once your skin is stable while on the Eczema Detox program .
This recipe is from Eczema Life, a group created to help people with skin rashes including eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea and TSW/red skin syndrome. Cucumber (variety not specified) has been added to the RPAH's list as medium salicylates. However, Malakar et al. 2017 measured "long peeled cucumbers" as a medium salicylate (2.93mg/kg) which includes both bound and free salicylates. The levels are about equal to celery, cabbage, and golden delicious apples (peeled) - if that gives you any context to how you may or may not react. The common, normal cucumber, ranks higher in the same study (5.81mg/kg), so I definitely recommend looking for the long, English cucumbers.
Mango seems like a mixed bag to me. They've been tested low/negligible in 1985 and 2011, and RPAH lists them as HIGH. RPAH does not distinguish if it's high because of salicylates though - they always combine amines and salicylates together, and mango is high in amines. However, Malakar et al 2017 did test Mango as high (7.09 mg/kg) which includes free and bound salicylates. They did not specify if it was peeled or not, nor what species/variety. For context, banana scored (5.39mg/kg - high) in the same study so if you can tolerate bananas well, you may be ok with mango.
I personally (Sarah V) like the atulfo/honey/Manilla/yellow mangoes and can tolerate a half a peeled mango every once in a while. These little mangoes taste more buttery, less fibrous, and are usually less tangy/acidic tasting.
