1 2/3 cup water |
2 tablespoons butter or canola oil |
1/2 cup packed brown sugar |
2 teaspoon salt |
4 2/3 cup whole wheat flour |
2 teaspoons active dry yeast |
We buy a 50 pound bag of whole wheat flour for around $20 - so it's definitely worth buying it in bulk and makes this go-to loaf quite affordable.
Bread machines vary in size. This is a recipe for a 2 pound loaf size, so adjust as needed.
We've used this in 3 different 2 pound bread makers with good success.
The yeast may need adjusting. The original recipe calls for 3 teaspoons, but it ended up being too much so we adjusted down to 2 teaspoons.
If you really like baking your own bread, I highly suggest getting the active dry yeast in bulk. I came across this in my rural town grocery store and had never seen anything so big! It is 1lb of yeast and usually sells for less than $20. https://www.amazon.com/Red-Star-Active-Yeast-pound/dp/B003EE0CHA We always bought the little brown jars (priced between $5-10), but had no idea we could go bigger!
